The concept of Einstein GPT credits is how Salesforce meters usage of the generative AI (since each time the AI generates something, there’s a computing cost). Think of credits like minutes on a phone plan or kilowatt-hours on an electric bill. When you buy Einstein GPT licenses, Salesforce includes a pool of credits – enough for typical usage by those users, based on what Salesforce expects. For instance, 100 Sales GPT users might come with (hypothetically) tens of thousands of AI-generated text characters included per month. If your organization’s usage stays within that pool, you just pay the flat license fee. If you use more (say your users go AI-wild and generate lots more content than average), then you’d incur overage charges for the extra credits consumed. The overage could be charged per credit or in blocks, depending on your agreement. Salesforce’s goal is to align pricing with usage: light to moderate use = just the base fee, heavy use = pay-as-you-go for the excess. A: Salesforce will provide tools (dashboards or reports in your org) to track AI credit consumption. As an admin, you should keep an eye on those regularly, especially early on. You can usually see how many credits have been used in a period and possibly which users or features are consuming the most. To avoid surprises, set up an internal threshold – for example, decide that if you’ve used, say, 80% of your monthly credits halfway through the month, that’s a red flag to investigate. You may be able to ask Salesforce for an alert when you approach your limit, although it might not be automatic, so proactive monitoring is important. Still, there are a few reasons companies opt for Salesforce’s native Einstein GPT: integration, maintenance, and risk. Einstein GPT is built into the Salesforce UI and workflow, which means your users don’t have to switch tools, and your admins don’t have to build numerous custom interfaces. The native solution also benefits from the Salesforce Trust Layer—so all the security, permissions, and logging are handled for you. If you DIY, you’d have to implement similar controls (ensuring the external AI can’t leak data, etc.), which can be complex and costly. Maintenance is another factor: Salesforce will continuously improve and update Einstein GPT as part of the platform. If you develop a custom AI integration, you own that code and its upkeep—adjusting to Salesforce upgrades, managing the AI model’s updates or drift, etc. That’s an ongoing effort and expertise you’d need in-house. Lastly, by using the official product, you have vendor support and less risk: if something goes wrong, you can call Salesforce for help. If your custom solution goes haywire, it’s on your team to fix. All that said, some organizations do a hybrid: they might use Einstein GPT for general use cases and also experiment with a specialized model for a niche scenario (like a proprietary algorithm for trading recommendations, etc.). And keeping an eye on alternative solutions is wise—it gives you leverage in negotiations (“we have other options”) and a fallback if Salesforce pricing or performance isn’t satisfactory. But most CIOs in regulated industries lean toward the native solution for the core CRM-integrated AI because it’s the path of least resistance to value: it works out-of-the-box with your Salesforce data and comes with contractual accountability from Salesforce. In summary, while you can integrate external or open-source AI, doing so at scale with the same level of security and convenience is non-trivial. Einstein GPT offers a ready-made, enterprise-vetted option that saves you from that internal development burden. The decision often comes down to evaluating the total cost of ownership (including time, risk, and maintenance) of a DIY approach versus the licensing cost of Salesforce’s solution. Many find that paying for Salesforce is justified to accelerate deployment and reduce risk, especially for broadly used AI features. You can always reserve your internal AI resources for projects where you need full control or have unique IP, and use Einstein GPT for the standard CRM augmentation tasks.

Q: What’s the best approach to negotiating the price and terms for Einstein AI features? Any tips?
A: Negotiating for Einstein GPT should follow many of the same principles as any software negotiation, but here are a few tailored tips: Time the negotiation with your renewal or big purchase if you can. Salesforce is more likely to deal if you’re also signing a major renewal or expansion – they have more flexibility on discounts when it’s part of a larger contract. Come into the discussion with data and a budget. For example, know how many users you think need the AI and what ROI you expect, and perhaps say, “We’ve budgeted $X for this investment.” If $X is below their list pricing, that sets the stage for them to come up with better pricing or phase the rollout to meet your budget.
